AIR PLANT HANGERS

Design Challenge: Create a hanger that evokes the light, playful, and elegantly simple spirit of the air plant.

Air plants are epiphytes which means they absorb their moisture and nutrients from the air. This allows for a lot of creativity in how they’re displayed because they don’t need soil. I wanted to play off the elegant simplicity of the organism while celebrating the weird and wiggly bodies that vary widely between species.

I chose clear glass and metallic edges for elegance and simplicity, and added wiggly wire accents for a visually interesting and playful finish. I used the copper foil stained glass technique to build the hangers, then filled them with plants based on size and personality.
